About the Tutkovsky Institute

Within the TUTKOVSKY International Hub of Natural Resources, the responsibility of the Tutkovsky Institute PHEI involves the functioning of the contractor by agreement on the management of projects and regional programmes on the study and justified use of natural resources, as well as services for exploration and production of metallic and non-metallic minerals, groundwater and other use of other natural resources.

The company was founded in March 1996 as a joint venture with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine – research company – Joint Stock Company (JSC) Institute of Applied Geophysics. The activities of the Institute were aimed at basic research of tectonics, structure, geodynamics and evolution of the lithosphere and solving of application problems:

  • Development of automated systems for processing and interpretation of geological and geophysical information;
  • Construction of three-dimensional integrated geophysical and petrophysical models of geological structures to predict natural resources;
  • Geophysical research of environment to predict seismic hazard and other natural hazards;
  • Development of physical and geological framework and new technologies of integrated geophysical prediction of hydrocarbons availability;
  • Development of new technologies and techniques to intensify production of energy.

Specialists of the Institute participated in the development of the concept of reforming the geological industry of Ukraine according to market conditions (2000).

The development and implementation of computerized measurement tools and software ensured the inspection of corrosion and electrochemical protection systems over 2,500 km of underground oil and gas pipelines, trunk and urban utilities.

Cooperation with the Institute of Geophysics of NAS of Ukraine enabled works on hydrocarbon production intensification, with the use of explosive energy.

A joint achievement of the Institute specialists and service companies of TUTKOVSKY was the introduction of the world's multi-seismic survey technologies, improving existing technologies, algorithms and applications of building high-speed models, three-dimensional seismic images of anisotropic media by seismic records of common sources and others. Considering the needs of oil and gas and service companies of Ukraine and other CIS countries for training of the personnel to work with these technologies, in 2004, reorganization of the CJSC Institute of Applied Geophysics resulted in the establishment of the Private Higher Educational Institution (PHEI) of Postgraduate Education – Nadra Professional Development Institute. In 2005, the Institute was licensed by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for provision of educational services by “Geology” and “Mining”, then, in the specialty “Environmental safety”. In 2008, to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ukrainian geologist Pavlo Apollonovych Tutkovsky, the Private Higher Educational Institution (PHEI) of Postgraduate Education — Nadra Professional Development Institute was renamed to Tutkovsky Institute PHEI.

The Institute provides short-term and long-term advanced training courses, seminars, training sessions and workshops. After graduation, the participants receive the certificates of the Institute.

Since 2009, the Institute has been successfully implementing a programme of Ukrainian Association of Geologists – Public Organization i.e., “Professional development of specialists of oil and gas industry of Ukraine for international cooperation and work in Western companies”. The programme is funded by TUTKOVSKY at the partner support of the companies Shell, Halliburton, Regal Petroleum, Discovery Drilling Equipment and specialized international NGOs, such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), the European Federation of Geologists (EFG). The program consisted of 30 lecture courses and seminars, in which 1190 persons from 96 establishments and organizations took part. The Institute conducted 36 two-week advanced training courses in the field of efficient and balanced use of natural resources. Diplomas of the state-recognised degree were obtained by 454 participants. Educational programmes of the Institute added to the professional knowledge of around 1,600 participants from more than 100 companies, institutions and organizations of the CIS countries. Scientific conferences organized by the Tutkovsky Institute PHEI were attended by 424 persons.

In 2011, the company initiated an educational project for students “Mineral wealth, spiritual wealth”. As part of the project, the subject “Principles of Geology” is taught in profiled schools with deep study of natural sciences disciplines. Seminars for teachers of geography, representatives of district departments of education of Kyiv city, Department of science and education, youth and sports of the executive body of the Kiev City Council are systematically held.

In 2013 in Kyiv the conferences were organised and held: «Scientific and methodological foundations of medical geology»; «Scientific and methodological prospects of the development of geological education». In the period from 2009 to 2013, the conferences were triply held in Donetsk «Assessment, extraction and use of unconventional types of gas: attraction of investments».

The Tutkovsky Institute spent technological days for the Ukrainian production and mining companies: in 2013, «Day of the newest technologies of exploration and production», in 2016, together with Halliburton company «Integrated services in cased wells».

Since 2017, the Tutkovsky Institute has been implementing a wide range of training programmes on project management, MS Project products, as well as student preparation programmes for the successful passing of the exam in the International Project Management Association (IPMA – International Project Management Association).

Along with educational activities, experts of the Institute participated in the organization and execution of large projects of TUTKOVSKY, including:

  • Analysis and preparation for an international audit of 126 oil and gas deposits of Ukraine ordered by Naftogaz of Ukraine;
  • Geological and economic assessment and investment analysis of licensed units in North Africa and the Middle East by agreements with NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine;
  • Organization and technological support of the first Ukrainian licensing round of areas of the Black and Azov seas ordered by the State Service of Geology and Mineral Resources of Ukraine.

The specialists of the Institute took part in project management that dealt with the following:

  • Exploration and production of tight natural gas reserves of the Rus-Komarivsk deposits (Ukraine);
  • Exploration and concomitant production of abrasive material (garnet) in the Ivanivsk granite deposit (Ukraine);
  • Exploration and development of deposits of kaolin and soda in North Africa;
  • Activities on integrated environmental decontamination of waters of the Azov and Black Seas (Balaklava Bay and South Bay of city Sevastopol) with their subsequent environmental certification.

The activity of the Institute covers an increasingly wide range of natural resources, thus the best professionals or subcontractors are involved on a temporary basis by all necessary areas.

The ability to form qualified projects teams, a wide range of international contacts, experience gained in the implementation and project management contribute to the company’s ability to act as the projects’ general contractor in the Hub, within the defined area of responsibility.
